Scott Kim's Inversions Page -- Isaac Asimov called him "The Escher of the Alphabet," which sums it up for me. Scott's book, Inversions, got me started (along with thousands of others, I'm sure). John Langdon's WordPlay -- Douglas Hofstadter called him "a marvellous creator and a consummate artist". Langdon's book Wordplay gives elegant examples and goes into the philosophical background of his ambigrams. His website provides an opening chapter that describes the process of developing an ambigram as well as a dissertation on symmetry.
Douglas Hofstadter-Though he doesn't display ambigrams on his page, this Pulitzer-prizewinning cognitive scientist deserves ranking in the "Top 3" Ambigram Pros for taking part in coining the word "Ambigram". He has also written an Italian Ambigram Book (Ambigrammi) and examples of some of his Ambigrams can be found on François Almaleh's page
Roy Leban's Ambigrams --** NEW! ** The chief technologist at Akimbo Sytems (makers of the excellent 3rd Generation Web Design tool Globetrotter) has been doing ambigrams for about 20 years. Most of his work has been done on paper, but a few nice peices escaped to the 'Net!
Petrick's Symmetricks --* NEW! * The designer of "Angel," an ambigram first published in 1976, Bob Petrick is one of John Langdon's friends who helped popularize ambigrams in the mid 70's!
