What happens when two ambigram designers meet each other in one of the the greatest cities in the world? They sit in a coffee shop and draw ambigrams of course! Take a look at the artists & their work in the first ever face-to-face Quick Draw!

This Quick Draw is a first in Ambigram.com’s history…as this was the first one conducted in person. Not only was it in person, but it was timed as well! When the dust settled, pencils & markers were spent and ideas exhausted, all it took was 20 minutes. There was also a neutral third party present who timed the event. Take a look at the work and feel free to comment as always!! [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists. We have permission to post them here, but you must get permission from the artist for any other use of their design, or to post them elsewhere.]

Backstory

Last December, I was lucky enough to meet René Pizarro when he and his wife were visiting New York City. René has been a frequent contributor to Ambigram.com and has created some fantastic work as part of his contribution. We decided to meet for coffee at one of the thousands of coffee shops in NYC, and what a surprise it was that our conversation took a turn towards ambigrams & graphic design! In the spur of the moment, we conducted a Quick Draw but kept it under wraps because there was another Quick Draw scheduled as well as a sponsored challenge. Since it was an impromptu challenge, neither of us wrote any step-by-step commentary. But, in this case, the work speaks for itself!

First, here is the original logo of the coffee shop.

And now, here are our ambigrammatic interpretations of the logo.

The artists hard at work.

That was a very exhausting & mentally draining 20 minutes! René, it was a pleasure to meet you and to Quick Draw!

If anyone is interested in participating in the next (or future) Quick Draw, please email me at nikita@ambigram.com with the subject line “I want to Quick Draw!”

The first Quick Draw of 2012 reminds us that there is a bit of holiday spirit in every one of us, despite what everyone else may think. The word choice for this QD was inspired by a classic British novel from the Victorian period. Want to see more?

For this Quick Draw, we give you a word that’s a reminder (or is it remainder?) of the 2011 holiday season. Both of the participants for this Quick Draw have been designing ambigrams & contributing to Ambigram.com for a while. So take a look at their solutions, feel free to post your own & discuss the work. Happy 2012 fellow ambigrammists! [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists. We have permission to post them here, but you must get permission from the artist for any other use of their design, or to post them elsewhere.]

Prajyot Damle

“BahHumbug”…To be honest i heard this word or phrase (pardon me if i am wrong ) for the first time. But to a ambigrammist a word is a word so the process starts with some doodling and scribbling the letters on a piece of paper.

Initially as we can see “b” and “g” are natural ambigrams as are “U” and “A”. So we are done there. next are “h” and “b”, initially thought of a capital “H” and “B”, but they were pretty unclear. Soon i got the combination of “h” and “b” pretty well and finalized on that.

The main task here was “hum” and “muh”. I thought of combining “hu” to make “M”. After spending a considerable amount of time i got the combination fairly. After completion a idea struck me, Why not a capital “B” instead of a small one. So i got to work and converted the thinking onto the paper. I also converted the top part of “h” to a bell to add to Christmas fever. This was my first completed ambigram after a gap of 3 months and i am very happy that i got it through.

Clayton Mabey

I started with a rotational sketch.

Then I thought it would be fun to complete a chain. I wasn’t too pleased with the B/H…so I didn’t push it to the infinite circular chain. I did like the humbug portion of the design.

Here’s my first sketches of a mirror design.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-2989 aligncenter" title="03 Bah Humbug!
Here is the design drawn out by hand with my blue pilot gel pen.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-2990 aligncenter" title="04 Bah Humbug!
Here is the design placed with an image of Scrooge.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-2991 aligncenter" title="05 Bah Humbug!
Dear Prajyot and Clayton, thank you for participating in this Quick Draw!

To the rest of the ambigram community: I know we waited a bit for this Quick Draw, but as you know, life can become hectic at times, especially over the holiday season. I would say it was worth the wait…but feel free to say Bah Humbug if you want to!

The first Ambigram Challenge of 2012 is a sponsored challenge! Several requests from the sponsor will truly make this a challenge which is more than worthy to kickstart another great year at Ambigram.com!

Fellow Ambigrammists, welcome back from what was hopefully a rest-filled holiday season! As promised in our last write-up in 2011, this year will be the best one yet. To help us guarantee that promise, here is the first challenge of 2012….and it is a sponsored challenge!

It’s All Greek Ambigram Challenge

For this Ambigram Challenge, you are being asked to create an ambigram for a unique soft drink company that is currently creating a new soda. The manufacturer (which will remain anonymous until the end of the challenge) will incorporate the final design on the product.

The Ambigram
The word that is being provided by the sponsor is ‘Greek Gold.’ It is to be a 180 degree rotational ambigram.

Sponsor Requirements
The sponsor has requested that the ambigram be kept in a stacked format, i.e. the word ‘Greek’ on top of the word ‘Gold.’ The sponsor will not completely exclude one-line ambigrams, but since the ambigram will be presented in a very small area, the stacked version will be given preference over single line ambigrams. In addition:

• Legibility/readability will be a major factor in the judges’ decision.
• Incorporating elements of the art of the Byzantine Empire (such as use of gold and crimson) is encouraged.
• Use of a byzantine style font (especially like the first example below) is encouraged.

Note that even though the characters in the example are not all English, they are offered as an example of the style that the sponsor is looking for.

Prizes

The top 5 ambigrams will be recognized by the sponsor, with the first place winner receiving $150. We will have the prize money in escrow, so the payout is guaranteed and will be awarded when the artist of the winning design(s) turns over the copyright of the design to the sponsor to use as they wish. The grand prize of USD $150 will be paid via Paypal from Ambigram.com. All dollar amounts are in USD.

Judging

Unlike most Ambigram.com Ambigram Challenges, this one will be judged exclusively by the sponsor of the contest. These are designs that are intended for use by the company, so while some comments may be provided by some of the judges, the winning ambigram will ultimately be selected by the sponsor.

All designs should be submitted by Sunday, February 5th; all the submissions will be posted within a day & then the judging process will begin. Results will be posted as soon as the sponsor has selected the top ambigram, and a boilerplate document will be sent to the winner shortly thereafter. Cash prizes to immediately follow after the designer returns the signed document (along with the requested files) to the sponsor.

The challenge will be open to everyone without restrictions. We will send a boilerplate document to the winner(s) that simply assigns the copyright of the design to the sponsor. Sending the document back to the sponsor will be a condition of payout. The details of this will be worked out after the winning ambigram is selected.

File Submission

• Please submit no more than 3 entries, and make sure that they are “finalized” before emailing them. We are getting swamped with entire collections of designs using incorrect file formats and dimensions; also, some artists make frequent revisions within the contest time frame and expect us to keep track of it all. You have several weeks for this challenge…so please take your time and send us the finalized submissions closer to the end of the contest. The ambigram(s) have to be created from scratch for this challenge. Make sure the files are in JPG format, 72dpi and AT LEAST 600×600 pixels in dimension. Please note that after the winning ambigram is selected, the sponsor may also request the final art in a vector format (.ai or .svg), so make sure you have that format available as well. That will be discussed between the sponsor and the winning designer.
• Please name your submissions as follows: JohnSmith_typeofambigram_Submissionnumber.jpg. Otherwise, it can be easy to lose track of which design belongs to which artist, especially if we get a lot of submissions.

To submit your ambigrams, or if you have any other questions, email us at challenge@ambigram.com.

For this Quick Draw, we present to you another holiday-themed word. If you cannot avoid the cliche, embrace it! The participants for today’s Quick Draw are both familiar to our wonderful audience & ambigram community. So, read on, take a look at the ambigram solution, and feel free to discuss, as well as post your own take on the current Quick Draw! [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists.

Johan Skylling

Hi fellow ambigramists! I’m very happy to do a quick draw again. Wow this was a tough one. Had a hard time just reading the word(s). I didn’t understood what I read at first – NAUGHTYORNICE. I thought it was some kind of extinct animal or something!

Pic 1
This was the first scetch i did. I had a hard time squeezing in the O in this solution.

Pic 2

I tried to do something with the first scetch for a while before I decided that it didn’t work at all and I went back to square one. I got an idea that if I combined C and E to create the N the rest would flow better and I think it did. All of a sudden the rest of the letter weren’t that hard and I think it turned out much more natural and easier to read.

Pic 3

Next step was to make it appealing to the eye and polish the lines.

Pic 4

This is the final version. I couldn’t resist to work on it a bit in Photoshop and add some colours.

Nikita Prokhorov

Dear Ambigram.com readers, forgive me, for I have sinned! Initially when the word for the Quick Draw was selected, I wanted to make it a 3-way challenge and would sneak in my ambigram at the end after the other two participants. However, the 2nd artist wasn’t able to participate at last minute due to other obligations & responsibilities. So, it ended up being a 1-on-1 challenge after all! I will say that my ambigram was finished several hours after the initial Quick Draw email with the word was sent out and my work was not influenced by the other artist’s submission.

This was the initial set of sketches that I quickly created to see how well the phrase would work. It did not take many sketches to work out the basic structure as you can see. And please ignore the other miscellaneous ambigram attempts on the page, as I was sketching several ambigrams at once. There were two challenges that I faced. One was whether to use all lowercase or uppercase, and the other was whether to use the uppercase R or a lowercase ‘r’ to work with all the other characters. The r/R dilemma proved to be the most challenging one, as in the sketches you almost see an uppercase R and then only half a character; that’s why I decided to use the lowercase ‘r’ instead of the uppercase. This problem I believe was solved successfully in the final ambigram. The only lowercase rule I broke was with the O/G flip, as a lowercase ‘g’ would not have worked as well.

After the initial exploration revealed that the phrase would work well, I attempted to produce a more refined sketch.

With the final vector solution, I adjusted the kerning between the TYOR and added several different elements to reflect the holiday nature of this ambigram, as well as the naughty/nice concept, represented by the halo and the devil tail. All in all, a fun challenge!

Dear Johan, beautiful job and solution! It was fun to see your ambigram and to observe the similarities, as well as the differences.

We will have one more Quick Draw before the end of the year…get ready participants! And of course, email me if you would like to participate in the final Quick Draw of the year!

With this Quick Draw, the holiday season starts several weeks early. Go buy some presents, sing some holiday tunes, drink some eggnog, and while you're celebrating, take a look at these ambigrams as well!

At Ambigram.com, we decided to start the holiday season early! For this Quick Draw, John Moore & Alex Paat squared off and took on the word Jingle Bells. Both participants are frequent visitors and contributors to Ambigram.com. Take a look at the work they’ve done, and as always, feel free to post your own take on this week’s Quick Draw! [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists. We have permission to post them here, but you must get permission from the artist for any other use of their design, or to post them elsewhere.]

Alex Paat

I make my best ambigrams by hand, so I decided to hand-draw the “Jingle Bells” ambigram and then scan it onto the computer. To save time and energy and to make the ambigram more accurate, I drew only the first half of my final drawings and added the second half digitally.

Although in the very early stages of the design process I experimented with making the “lls” in “bells” flip into the “J” in “jingle,” I found it more effective and legible if the “s” simply flipped into the “j.” The easy “g-b” letter combination helped piece together the final result, and all the letter combinations came together easily after that.

When I had figured out the final solution, I decided to draw some holly leaves and berries inside the letters to give the final ambigram a Christmas feel. Since I believe that legibility is by far the most important aspect of an ambigram, I wanted the holly graphics to be subtle enough so as to not overpower the ambigram, while still effectively contributing to the Christmas theme. I hope the final ambigram is both readable and aesthetically pleasing. Merry (early) Christmas to you all, and I hope my ambigram helped you get into the Christmas spirit!

John Moore

When I saw the word is supposed that feasibility had to be created. I began toconsider its options, with the chart pattern or inverted letters of the word, so to study the similarities and opportunities provided by way of combining those letters fairly to both inversions.

In fact, the ”J” and “S” are of the same morphological family, likewise the ”I” and “L”, similar case is the combination “N” with ”EL”, whose inversion allow ambiguity.

Arriving at the ”G” I see that looks very similar to the “B”, which was not a problem. The dilemma began to try to get to center of the word, where “L” fight the epicenter with the “E”, this inversion makes the “L” anticipate the “B”. For more I tried to solve this dilemma, I couldn’t integrate it with the “B” therefore sought to disguise the ”L”, so to avoid this undesirable interference, trying to camouflage as an ornament, that somehow seems to be part of the “B ”. No doubt the center of the word is the big problem with this ambigram where “E” is surrounded by letters “L”.

If you ask me if I am 100% satisfied, I am convinced that no, although the universe of possibilities is infinite, I had to solve as we see in the picture. I only hope that the public likes it.

Dear Alex and John, thank you for participating! The next Quick Draw is already in progress, and it promises to be a doozie…with a potential 3-way participation!

The top five entries for the Halloween challenge showcase the work of several familiar artists as well as one new participant. Take a look at the amazing top 5 ambigrams and the winning ambigram, and when you are done, check out the ACAC16 theme and get those pencils and pens ready to sketch!

The Halloween challenge had it all: scary movies, monsters, killer dolls and movie villains. Although there were fewer submissions this time around (maybe everyone was scared to submit?) the quality of the submissions was incredible. From very simple to incredibly complex, there was a very wide range of work and choosing the top five ambigrams, once again, was very difficult. Take a look at the wonderful work and let’s hear what you think of the top five ambigrams for the Halloween Ambigram Challenge! [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists. We have permission to post them here, but you must get permission from the artist for any other use of their design, or to post them elsewhere.]

Winner – Johan Skylling

Johan Skylling once again takes the top spot. This ambigram has so many unique and complex layers to it that it seems impossible for them to work together well. Yet, all the layers integrate seamlessly with one another while still maintaining great legibility and recognition of all the elements. Beautiful work Johan!!

#2 – Dan Adona Jr.

The second entry comes to us from a new participant. Let us welcome Dan and his work to Ambigram.com! His submission is elegant & whimsical; the decorative flourishes, which are often an overused element, function well as characters in one orientation and decorative elements in another. Maybe a few too many flourishes faded into the background, but other than that, a beautifully balanced ambigram!

#3 – Robert Maitland

The legibility and elegance of this ambigram comes from its simplicity. Beautifully crafted letters, no unnecessary elements and subtle touches make this ambigram extremely easy to read and convey the meaning of the via not only the word itself, but also with colors and the lettering style. Great job Robert!

#4 – Sharath Kumar

Another great submission from Sharath. Beautiful lettering style and ambigram texture. The only element of the ambigram that’s slightly inconsistent is the angular T/E combo, which is a bit out of sync with the beautifully curved characters in the rest of the ambigram. Despite that, another well done entry!

#5 – Jennifer Thorne

Rounding off the top 5 is an ambigram from another frequent contributor. This ambigram has a very unique & original presentation. A few of the letters are a bit challenging to read, but the context of the ambigram makes up for some of those challenges. A fun presentation and a good lettering style make this submission a very worthy top five candidate. Nice work!

Dear participants, thank you for submitting your wonderful work to the Ambigram Challenges and making them as successful as they’ve been!

Ambigram Challenge 16 – Holidays!

The holiday season is here once again, which means it’s time for decorations, presents and holiday-themed ambigrams!

Rules

1. You are allowed to submit an ambigram which is relevant to any holiday that takes place from December 21st to January 6th. This covers Christmas, New Years, and several other holidays. If you are not sure whether a certain holiday is appropriate or not, email us and ask! These challenges are fun and don’t carry too many restrictions. Also, if the holiday you want to focus on is only celebrated in your culture/country, please send us a link to a brief synopsis of the holiday and its tradition. But almost anything is fair game.

2. For this challenge, your ambigram will be judged on how festive it is and how it represents the selected holiday visually. That means the use of additional visuals, colors and decorative elements that are relevant to your chosen holiday is allowed and encouraged. Of course, legibility and readability will still be valued highly.

3. Because of a wide range of various holidays and because our wonderful audience/participants reside on nearly every continent, you are allowed to submit up to 4 entries. Make sure that they are “finalized” before emailing them. And please do not email us multiple revisions of your ambigram: once you email it the first time, that’s it.

4. To better track the designs, please name your submissions as follows:
JohnSmith_typeofambigram_Submissionnumber.jpg

5. When emailing your entries to challenge@ambigram.com, it is imperative that you do the following.
a. Put “Ambigram Challenge 16 or ACAC16 in the email subject line.
b. Email your ambigrams as attachments and NOT embed them in the body of the email.

Otherwise, it can be easy to lose track of which design belongs to which artist, especially if we get a lot of submissions.

Deadline

All artwork will need to be submitted by midnight on Sunday, December 18th, 2011 to qualify. Email your designs to challenge@ambigram.com . The contest is open to everyone, whether or not you have participated in the past, so give it a shot!

The results will be published on December 23rd, 2011.

News and Updates

While we are waiting for the Holiday Challenge, we will have several Quick Draws, Interviews and a few other fun articles. After the Holiday challenge ends, we will take a quick break for the holidays, but will resume full-scale operations during the first week of January 2012.

The timing for this challenge couldn’t have been more perfect. After the most recent Quick Draw, with a certain scary holiday just around the corner, we couldn’t resist a Halloween-themed challenge!
This Quick Draw has its roots in a physics concept and has a connection to a book which brought ambigrams into the limelight. Interested in finding out more?

The word for this Quick Draw has a connection to physics as well as the book Angels & Demons, which any ambigram design should be more than familiar with! The two artists going head to head in Quick Draw this week have contributed to the website before. Say hello to Sharath Kumar and Nick Gilbert, and take a look at their antimatter(s)! [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists. We have permission to post them here, but you must get permission from the artist for any other use of their design, or to post them elsewhere.]

Nick Gilbert

ANTIMATTER was an easy word to work with because it required little letter wrestling. Normally, I begin an ambigram by sketching out its inner workings, instead of first figuring out the word’s center point or deciding which letters share stems. Specifically, I start with the first letter and work my way along the word to find the center point. With ANTIMATTER, the ‘m’ was the center point.

Once I decided the manner in which to engineer the word, I used Illustrator to design it. I found the typeface ‘Magneto’ a suitable font to use for ANTIMATTER. I modeled the entire design from the ’m', ‘t’, and ‘i’. Simultaneously creating a crossbar for the second ‘a’ while and eliminating distraction from the ‘t’ and ‘i’ was the main engineering feat.

Enlarging the ‘m’ deconstructs the word, makes it legible, creates a dot for the ‘i’, and makes the design look like a logo. Overall, I am content with the final results.

Sharath Kumar

The word I received this time had very frequently used letters. So it gave me the 1st impression that I got a very simple word to ambigram.

As usual I started with choosing the important combination to be taken care. Though a/e combination was tempting, I didn’t want to leave ‘r’ alone or go for a chain ambigram. So I decided to club ‘a’ and ‘R’. n/te was fairly simple. t/t was ok and remaining ‘ima’. With that imagination in my mind and I wrote down the word on paper (fig. 1.1)

I preferred my regular vertical bar lettering style (influenced by Nikita) as it was easier to tackle a/R combo in that style. I started writing letters on the paper (fig. 1.2 & 1.3). After the 1st half got completed I couldn’t resist myself from jumping into computer (sad.. I know). On computer it was a fairly simple job to trace the letters (it is much easier nowadays as I draw neatly on paper). After completing the ambigram I couldn’t convince myself that it was readable and I felt the 1st part of ‘m’ was too small and was looking awkward (fig 2).

I readjusted it slightly and tilted it to hide the awkwardness. The tilted version looked much better (fig 3).

I wasn’t 100 % satisfied with the shape of ‘m’. So, I started thinking of an alternative. After applying some thoughts on a better solution, I came up with the idea of changing the shape of ‘a’ slightly to adjust ‘m’. R/a combination were still looking good to me. With that change I created another ambigram (fig 4).

I still had the feel that the design was unreadable. But my parents could read it instantly without me even telling anything about the word. It made me happy and thought of mailing my designs.

But I felt guilty of not attempting hand drawn version (which I wanted do for this QD). So I decided to draw it completely on paper.

I had a very nice start on paper with my fingers moving very fluently. Everything was nice until it came to the last 3 letters. I suddenly realized that the paper wasn’t large enough to draw remaining letters! Add it to the list of ‘SHARATH’S BLUNDERS’. What to do? I decided to stop it there. To give it a decent finish, I took the snap of it, cropped the half part and attached the other half, removed shades to give a final touch to my handmade version of ‘antimatter’.

Big thanks to ambigram.com for the challenge. The word wasn’t as simple as I initially had thought of, but wasn’t complex enough to scratch my head or bang my head on the wall

“LOVE LETTERS, THEY BLEND AS YOU WISH”

Dear Nick and Sharath, thank you for participating in the Quick Draw! Great work!

Without a doubt this has been the most unique challenge we've had so far. From the unusual mediums to unlimited creativity of the participants, this challenge had it all! Click to find out more!

This challenge has been the most difficult, and successful, that Ambigram.com has ever conducted! This is the one challenge where most of the artists (with the exception of one or two) were pushed far out of their comfort zone. With every submission sent in, we thought that it would not get any better. Yet, with every entry there was something unique: a new medium, a creative letter combination, drawing technique, or simply a very complex word. If selecting a winner was difficult before, for this challenge it was nearly impossible. But, after putting out heads together, we begrudgingly selected the top five ambigrams, as well as some honorable mentions. Take a look! [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists. We have permission to post them here, but you must get permission from the artist for any other use of their design, or to post them elsewhere.]

Winner – Johan Skylling

Once again, Johan has set the bar high for himself…and reached it! The word he chose for his entry is a challenging one, but the execution is absolutely amazing. This is a great example where the ambigram, context and other elements blend together seamlessly. Regardless of how you turn this ambigram, it is definitely a cut above the rest!

Second place – Harold kit Elvira

As the gears of a clock are precisely machined to function perfectly and in unison, so is this ambigram. The lettering is gorgeous, the background contributes to the concept but does not overpower it. Clockwork precision & beautiful work from Harold. Let’s welcome him to Ambigram.com, as this is his first submission!

Third place – John Langdon

The third entry comes to us from none other than John Langdon. It’s wonderful to see the process & development of an ambigram, which is precisely what we were lucky enough to get from John! Beautifully rendered flowing letterforms, tactfully added flourishes, and impeccable legibility show why John is one of the best!

Fourth place – Carl Mehling

Without a doubt, this is one of the most, if not the most unique mediums we have ever seen! Carl Mehling has submitted ambigrams in the past, and his other mediums included carving an ambigram on a rock. Great submission, unique medium, and we cannot wait to see what his medium of choice will be next time!

Fifth place – Sharath Kumar

Sharath is well known to experiment with different lettering styles and types of ambigrams, and that never-ending exploration contributes to his continual success as an ambigram designer. He chose a great concept for this submission, and the somewhat reserved lettering style is well complimented by his wonderful background illustrations that, once again, help the ambigram instead of hindering it. Great job!

Honorable mentions

There were several other ambigrams that, although they didn’t make it into the top five, deserve to be recognized for the creativity that the artists exhibited.

Both Elwin and Lei have been regular contributors in the past, and their submissions this time around showcase a very well-rendered and beautiful calligraphic/black-letter style. A great lettering job from both Elwin and Lei!

Nick is a first time contributor, so let’s welcome him to Ambigram.com! His linoleum-block ambigram print is one of the most unique ones in the challenge. Colin has gotten very creative with his past submissions, yet his impromptu chalk ambigram on the sidewalk ranks at the top with some of the most creative mediums we have seen.

Colin gets another honorable mention for his second submission along with Clayton, who has also been a frequent contributor. In both cases, it’s hard to imagine the submissions without their elegantly executed and artistic background. The shading and pencil work is exquisite in both entries.

A big thanks to the participants for another successful Ambigram Challenge!!!

Ambigram Challenge 15 – No Fear

Don’t be afraid…this is our Halloween Challenge!! This timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as it gives everyone about four weeks to submit their entries and will allow us to post the results on Halloween!

Here are the rules & regulations.

Rules

1. For this challenge you are allowed to create any type of ambigram. Rotational, reflective, symbiotogram, etc. As for the actual topic of the ambigram, it can be anything related to Halloween: your favorite scary movie, scary movie character, scary song, etc. If you are not sure, email us with questions to challenge@ambigram.com.

2. For this challenge, your ambigrams will be judged on legibility and readability; in addition, we would like to see the idea of Halloween reflected in other elements that aren’t the ambigram. Keep in mind that while being predictable with colors and Halloween-relevant imagery is easy & safe, you can also use lettering styles and colors that are related to the movie or movie character you are trying to portray.

3. Please submit no more than 2 entries, and make sure that they are properly sized and named before emailing them.

4. To better track the designs, please name your submissions as follows: JohnSmith_Submissionnumber_Challengenumber.jpg. Otherwise, it can be easy to lose track of which design belongs to which artist, especially if we get a lot of submissions. Also, DO NOT embed your images in the body of the email, but send them AS ATTACHMENTS.

Deadline

All artwork will need to be submitted by midnight on Friday, October 28th, 2011 to qualify. Email your designs to challenge@ambigram.com . The contest is open to everyone, whether or not you have participated in the past, so give it a shot!

The results will be published on Halloween, and the next challenge will be announced at that time.

The Old School Challenge submissions are in, and based on the quality of the work, we may have to do EVERY challenge by hand from now on! The submissions are amazing...but don't take our word for it. Click to find out!

As you may remember, the Old School Challenge was very open in terms of guidelines, and the only limitation was no computers. We thought that this stipulation would put the proverbial artistic handcuffs on our participants since most of us love working on the computer. What we didn’t realize is how much the artists would push themselves and expand their own creativity. The entries are absolutely ASTOUNDING! From the complexity of the designs to the medium choices, the entries amazed us on every level. So without further delay, let’s take a look at the submissions. Although the submissions are posted anonymously, you may recognize some of them. If the artist wants to come forward and state they created a certain piece, they are welcome to do so: for everyone else, please don’t point out the artist’s work even if you recognize it. [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists. We have permission to post them here, but you must get permission from the artist for any other use of their design, or to post them elsewhere.]
