Ambigram Challenge – Resurrection
Aug 28th, 2009 | By Nikita | Category: A.C.A.C., Feature
Welcome
Welcome to the brand-new Ambigram.Com Ambigram Challenge (ACAC).
The ACAC is not entirely new… because it will be run partly by NAGFA, the inventors of the original ambigram challenge. It’s really a rebirth of the Nagfa Ambigram Challenge (NAC) in a new form and a new location.
Since the Ambigram Challenge is being literally being “born again”, there are some new rules, new details, and a couple of twists (pun intended). The first ambigram challenge theme is also quite appropriate:
“Resurrection”
Like a phoenix rising from smoldering ashes, the ambigram challenge is coming back from the dead.
What better theme to use for the first ACAC than “Resurrection”? The creators of the original ambigram challenge (NAGFA) even came up with the theme, which somehow seems appropriate. The theme offers a lot of possibilities: Phoenix, Ashes, Dust to Dust, Rebirth, Second Chance, Second Wind, Part Two, The Sequel, Afterlife, Born Again, New Epoch, etc. You can choose any word or phrase that deals with the theme of resurrection or rebirth for your submission to the first ACAC.
Rules and Details
- Select a word or phrase dealing with the theme of “resurrection” or “rebirth” and create an ambigram from your selected word or phrase.
- Render your your final ambigram in uncompressed, or barely compressed JPG, GIF or PNG format.
- Your submission should be at least 600 pixels wide and 600 pixels high at no lower than 72 dpi. We will resize it for display.
- Create an email message with your final design attached and address it to:
- In your email message, include your full name and web site URL (preferably to your ambigram gallery, if you have one). This will be published for all designs chosen for display (usually the top 5 designs).
- Also, include one or two paragraphs about your ambigram: your word selection, design decisions, challenges, etc. This information will be posted along with your design if your design is selected as the contest winner.
If you want further details, you can view the full Ambigram Challenge Official Rules.
Due date: Friday, September 25th
Submissions for the Resurrection challenge are due on Friday, September 25th, and submissions received after that date will not be eligible for the contest.
The winners will be posted on the site on Friday, October 9th. At that time, the next challenge will be posted.
The Ambigrammy Awards
The winner of each ACAC will automatically be nominated to win an Ambigrammy Award.
What is an Ambigrammy Award?
Just as the music industry recognizes outstanding music with a Grammy award, and the movie industry awards top performances with an Oscar award, the best ambigram designs will be recognized with an Ambigrammy award.
The Ambigrammy will be the annual recognition of excellence in ambigram design. You will be hearing more information about the Ambigrammy awards closer to the award ceremony. For now, just know that the winner of each ACAC will be automatically nominated for an Ambigrammy, and you will be given bragging rights that you can publish on your own web site (“Nominated for an Ambigrammy”).
Questions
We are very excited about the launch of the ACAC and looking forward to some fantastic submissions from the ambigram community. Feel free to post general questions below, or email specific questions to: .

Very good news!
Nice! I like the photos on the A.C.A.C. logo.. funny idea!!
yeah, resurrect the ambigram industry. thanks to nagfa ang nikita. cheers
It’s a wonderfull idea. All the ambigrams’ designers thank you.
I already sent my ambigram!
Is it recquired for my ambigram to be vectorized? Well, I’m too young and I don’t know how to.
)
Zoner – No, the ambigram does not need to be rendered from a vector file, although this usually enhances the appearance and may help your chances to win.
Ow. That’s bad. It DOES increase the chance of winning. Anyway, I’ve still got days. I’ll try learning how to. Many thanks.
Zoner,
You can download a great vector drawing program called Inkscape. http://www.inkscape.org/ It has a similar user interface as Adobe Illustrator and has some great tutorials & information online. That should help.
@Nikita
I’ll check it out as soon as I’m done with my studies. I really appreciate the help.
I submitted mine, can’t wait to see the results.
I sent mine already. I’m so excited!
I just submitted mine on the last day. I hope we have some kinda feedback from the pros to help draw better.
Is a graphic tablet necessary to draw ambigrams on the computer?
Zoner – no, it isn’t. I’ve never used a tablet to draw my ambigrams.
How submissions were received for this contest?
How many submissions were received for this contest?*
Hey, great to see that the ambigram challenge is back up & running. Good luck with it! Spotted this page just too late to be able to come up with anything to submit, but I’ll keep it bookmarked to see the results and maybe have a go next time!
Thank you everyone for submitting their entries to the ACAC: Resurrection. It’s been a hit so far, and we’ve received approximately 30 entries! A fantastic turnout for the first one! Next time, we want to double that number! So, keep on ambigramming, hone those skills, and we’ll have the results, as well as the next theme for the ACAC posted in the following weeks.

Is a graphic tablet necessary to draw ambigrams on the computer?
HE,
It’s not necessary, but it helps. I use my Wacom graphic tablet not just for ambigrams, but for other projects as well.
Nikita
HE,
A Graphics Tablet bridges the gap between digital and traditional art. It allows you to literally draw digital shapes. However, this can be done just as easily through a vector program, it juts needs a bit of practice. This seems to be a problem for many new digital artists as they mistakenly believe they need every technology available to achieve even the smallest of tasks.
That’s the same as saying I can’t catch fish because I don’t have a spanking new fishing rod. No, people catch fish with just a string and a worm.
I know it’s tough shifting your focus from the paper to the screen. You don’t know what you need and 5 years later, you realise you bought too many things that don’t matter. So there’s one simple rule in my book. There’s no NEED to buy anything. Buy equipment when yo realise what will accentuate your artistic strengths. If you read the above comments there are many links to open-source and free softwares that can help in ambigram renderation.
Loved the contest…though I entered quite late
Finally I got words to draw, without having to ask random people on the bus their names so that I could draw it
Salaam
Sameh
