Old School Submissions

Sep 14th, 2011 | By | Category: A.C.A.C., Feature

As you may remember, the Old School Challenge was very open in terms of guidelines, and the only limitation was no computers. We thought that this stipulation would put the proverbial artistic handcuffs on our participants since most of us love working on the computer. What we didn’t realize is how much the artists would push themselves and expand their own creativity. The entries are absolutely ASTOUNDING! From the complexity of the designs to the medium choices, the entries amazed us on every level. So without further delay, let’s take a look at the submissions. Although the submissions are posted anonymously, you may recognize some of them. If the artist wants to come forward and state they created a certain piece, they are welcome to do so: for everyone else, please don’t point out the artist’s work even if you recognize it. [NOTE: All designs are copyrighted by the respective artists. We have permission to post them here, but you must get permission from the artist for any other use of their design, or to post them elsewhere.]

Old School Challenge Submissions

There were a lot of emails and questions regarding this particular challenge. If we missed an entry from anyone, email us ASAP and we’ll add it to the gallery. Apologies in advance for missing anyone!

  1. Oh wow, look at all these wonderful entries! The “Paper cut” and “Sisters Forever” are especially fantastic!

  2. huhuhuhuh:( my entry wasn’t here. when i checked my email all i got was a Failure Notice :(

“Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.
I’m afraid I wasn’t able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I’ve given up. Sorry it didn’t work out.
Remote host said: 420 Please try later
I’m not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.”

It already had happened and cant turn back time. Poor newbie:). Anyway, the submissions were amazing. #10 is my favorite, simple and unique.

  3. HK, email me please.

  4. Sent. thank you nikita. Im so proud to part of this ambigram community.

  5. These are wonderful!! Must sleep. Will comment tomorrow. Wow!!!

  6. Wow, you guys never cease to amaze me.

    (You, too, Nikita!)

I love the creativity, and a couple of these are just over-the-top awesome!

Thank you again for making me smile.

  7. Awesome is the only word..
Papercut,heart,ancient/modern,entry number 27,sweet home are freakishly creative..
The transition and development of Sisters forever is inspiring. Would love to learn such stuff from the pro’s
Paper cut is really creative and for me the winner..
can guess who’s work it is.. i suppose elwin..
Ambigram Community has a bunch of awesomely creative people..
These guys have creative brains which work perfectly and uniquely for every challenge.
Could scarper a entry this time myself but will surely participate in the next challenge!!
    Great work..

  8. ahhhh, I thought the results would be up today! Silly me!

These all look great everyone! Well done!

  9. I still have absolutely no idea how to use a computer to make an ambigram. Yet, these designs are amazing! I would have entered, apparently there’s this thing called time.

  10. @Deren: The results don’t carry too much weight as all of them are equally good. whichever design wins will win by a very very narrow margin.

    @All
It is a treat for eyes. I feel we should have only hand drawn ambigrams from now on…

After the 1st look at all the submissions, these are my favourites (not in order).
    papercut
    handmade
    right/wrong
    sisters forever
    ancient/modern
    sweet home

Paper cut is something that blew me away. I also had the idea of using scissor and draw an ambigram without pencil ;) But it is very difficult and you need lot of patience. So, as I know the difficulty behind creating it, ‘papercut’ wins my vote.

  11. Hi everyone,
wow this challenge worked out great. This is just great. There are a lot of wonderful ambigrams. Applause to all submissions :)

    My favs:
    • Heart: I love it because I have no clue why I never tried my hands on this word :) The execution is perfect with that little 3D-style and armors-arrow. Clean, simple and clever!
    • Sisters forever: Great style, nice contrast, high readability. Hot!!!
    • Handmade: Great word, nice style and I like the composition of the photo as well :)
    • Papercut: What can I say. Great idea. I like the P/C, looks almost natural. E/R is also beautiful
    • Nikitas Entry: I like the style. Fits perfect for that long term.

The other entrys are also nice and very creative, but I can’t write down a book on all this nice ideas.

    GREAT WORK EVERYONE!

  12. @Sharath Fair enough! thats great, I’m glad my work can be apart of that sentence! :P
I only draw by hand, so the opportunity to see everyone elses by hand was great!

As its my first submission, can I ask for some constructive criticism?

Mine is No. 5. A short explanation, It reads the palindrome “AmoreRoma”, which is Italian for “Love Rome”

Without the mirror it is a rotational ambigram of the word “Amor”, it is only with the mirror that the full palindrom is revealed :)

My favourites are probably “Papercut” and “Handmade”
and does The parrot one say what I think it does? XD

  13. Fantastic work everyone once again! And Bjorn, my entry is more humorous than anything. I couldn’t select a good word so the current choice was a tongue in cheek replacement. Since I am one of the judges, my entry won’t be one of the ones being judged. ;)

  14. I am falling short of words trying to applaud to all of these submissions. Well, just to keep it short—–AMAZING. Hats off to all the artists. These design are really great. Well this challenge brought about something new from out of everyone and taught me some very valuable lessons too ;) :-

    1. Art on computer is not as enjoyable as by hand. You get to feel your artwork while doing it by hand not in the digitized way. So from now on, I am going for handmade ambigrams only!

    2. Technology cannot replace the handwork for an artist. It is just a tool used to assist not to make.

    3. Painting is really hard ;) . Doing this challenge I realized that I should have paid attention to my art classes in my junior grades. I would generally go for pencil shading instead. ;)

    What do think fellow artists?

  15. Submissions amazing, I was impressed with the talent of these artists. Congratulations, this was simply STUNNING.

  16. Hello everyone,

First off I would like to say that each design is great. I only had my phone to look at them last night and it really didn’t do them justice. Now that I am at a computer looking at them, my favorites have clearly changed.
After reading the comments this far, I will leave my design a mystery for the fun of it. But I will list my fav’s without putting them in any particular order.

    They would be:

Heart – is well thought out
    Sisters – very nice
Handmade (both of them) – very clean
    Paper cut – is awesome
Nikita’s – though not an entry, I know how fast he came up with it and it is great
Home sweet home and Ancient/modern and right/wrong – love the artwork in all three.

I in no way want to take away from the other designs, they are all great! And I mean that sincerely, these would all look great in a table book.
This was a great challenge, as many of you know, I do most of my work by hand so this was fun for me to see everyone go back to their roots, put away the computers, and let creativity flow. Great job all!

    Elwin

  17. My mind is blown. This was just amazing, congratulations to the artists, and to the editors for coming up with such a cool concept.

My favorites are Handmade and Sisters Forever, but I also think Never Erase is very good, and I loved to see two entries that took this to a whole new level doing street art (I mean numbers 27 and 34). Papercut is very cool as well… and would make a nice stencil, by the way. And Heart, Sweet Home, and so many others…

@Deren: At first glance, I must admit that I didn’t pay too much attention to your submission, but on a deeper look, and after reading your explanation, I realized that you did something preety impressive there. It’s a three way ambigram (the word “amore” turns into “amore” and reflects into “roma”), a very complex idea, even more if you add the fact that it is also a palindrome. I think the only problem would be legibility… but I think you chose the combinations correcly. Maybe the ornaments are a little too heavy and are not helping to make it easier to read.

@Nikita: Have you thought of presenting the entries in a different way, maybe some kind of slideshow or gallery? The problem with this kind of thumbnails is that wider works get very few visibility (i.e number 34).

  18. @Deren: Thats pretty cool… I started my journey on ACAC with some similar solution. Reminds me that :) As soon as I saw that I felt No5 submission has something special in it… Just didn’t have the time to read it. Great start! All the best…

Due to such amazing submissions some very good submissions are going unnoticed. Sad it is… Will spend some time to go through each and every design and will comment in detail.

  19. thanks Sharath and Homero :)

The BIGGEST thing I learnt from this, is that an ambigram isnt finished once you’ve “solved” the design. Or even once you’ve drawn it out.. You guys present your drawings so well, the presentation itself is art. I never really thought of doing that.. I blame my scientific mind, im a problem solver not an artist :P

and I also like all the comments about continuing to design by hand, I will always. Though I wish Ctrl+Z worked..

  20. Just to add a little…

There is a lot added to a design by the though that goes into the presentation. This is seen clearly in the PapeRcut design, the two different photos are presented so well (on a side note, I love how this sort of represents photoshop and it’s layers). The Pencil and Paper design, while the solution is great, is improved my the quality of the picture taken.

Great work, keep it up all…

    Elwin

  21. Wow! Just wow!!!

@all: Awesome designs!!!! I love Amore/Roma, Handmade ambigram (diego), Papercut… actually all of them are just wow!

@Deren, yes. This is my work. It says “the parrot” and the picture above it is a parrot, while turning it, it reads “soiled me” while showing a kid’s head. :)

    @all again: keep ambigraming!

  22. [...] To see all of the submissions, click here: http://www.ambigram.com/ac14-submissions [...]

  23. Hats off to all. A few that stand out…

Papercut (wonderful presentation, and excellent design)
Tempt (this is actual graffiti – love it)
Amore/Roma (first rotational mirror that I’ve ever seen)
Nikita (You could create a font – called Atikin?)
Ancient/Modern (So well thought out – beautiful)
    Right/Wrong (Absolute CRAP – Go home!!…wait)
Handmade Ambigram (Great Flow – Smooth)
Handmade Ambigram Diego (I’m loving this style – Great work)
Rock N’ Roll (Good style – Very Readible)
A Driving Man (Talk about detail – Wow)
Sweet Home (Even though the reflection is not a mirror, it’s such a cool way to show the design)
Sisters Forever/Forever SIsters (Great flow – Clear)
Pencil/Paper (Brutally difficult project – Nicely executed)
Never Erase (Solid Style – Clear)

I love to draw by hand. The further away I can look from a generator output, the happier I am!!

  24. @Vasileios thank for the love! As for yours… When I first rotated my head, I couldnt believe what I read.. but the design is so clear (well done) that I knew there was nothing else it could be. I then proceeded to look up the definition of “soiled” to make sure there wasnt some sophisticted meaning of the word that I was missing out on XD

but its a kid!!! I didnt see that the first time! very impressive! I love it all! first ambigram thats made me laugh, thats for sure! :D

@Clayton, I assume urs is the right/wrong one then :P when I first read it, I found it difficult because I was expecting it to say Right/Left :S then I was like.. what else parallels right? (ud think the giant thumbs would of helped me) but then it hit me, and it all clicked!

I love ALL of the shading, especially on the lettering, its very impressive (I am envious). and I really like the wr/ht solution! im gnna have to remember that :)

@Everyone, has anyone seen or done a rotational+mirror ambigram before? other than MOM/WOW XD
I was also surprised at the lack of ambigrams for palindromes, I did some research and couldn’t find much :S

  25. Wow. Mine is looking pretty bad now (mine is the freddie mercury one) :P

  26. Great submission from all!
@Steel Driving Man. What’s the medium? I love the combination of everything that makes this piece. The rivots are really neat!
@Never Erase- Is that crossstich? I can’t tell. If so, amazing!
@Papercut–the lack of any medium makes this especially unique :)
I find the entries with unique mediums most interesting.
That being said, mine is the blue carved woodblock print.
It says ‘Jonah’ (the whale shapes are in the ‘a’ and o’).
It’s a tesselating ambigram, which means it connects with itself with no gaps or overlays and would continue to inifinity and beyond!
Thanks for the fun challenege Nikita!

  27. @Deren: I have done some 3-4 rotational/ mirror/ reflection ambigrams and one rotational/reflection ambigram (danchan – my 1st submission to ambigram challenges). What you have come up with is a different one and a very clever one. If you have a facebook account, please reach me there. We will have lot of ideas to discuss.
    Ambigram.com doesn’t have a forum to discuss :)

  28. Just so everyone knows…forums are first on put list. It will happen…soon. ;)

Now back on topic with the discussion of these amazing entries…stat!! ;)

  29. Forums sound like a wonderful idea! I wonder if anyone’s been bugging Nikita about that? ;)

  30. 25, 26, 27, 34 are haven’t used paper as their medium!!! Nice. Among these, ‘Never erase’ stands out. Love it. (Not sure about 4. Looks like paper. But is easily readable and great)

The use of burnt paper in harry potter is an amazing idea!

Hats off to the photographer of ‘pencil and paper’. The angle in which the photo is taken make it better presented ambigram.

I have few things to tell about one of my submissions (some of them would have guessed all my submissions)

    “Heart”

With challenge being old school, the whole world was trying to get the precise symmetry in their ambigrams. So it was my intentional attempt to get the maximum asymmetry ;)

It is an ‘intentional asymmetrical ambigram’ (not a symbiotogram). It reads Heart both the way but shape of the letters aren’t the same!! I am hoping to see some asymmetrical ambigrams in future where a word reads in all upper case from one side and all lower case from other side. Say ‘HEART/heart’ ambigram ;) CRAZY???

So, to put such an idea across, I chose this simple word ‘Heart’ and blended it with the heart shape (I haven’t come out of my human trophy design concept yet ;) )

  31. Hi all, I’m new here..

Some of the entries here are just so strong conceptually. And the execution for some are really out of the box. There are some here which I spent some time staring and marvelling; such details! And I’ll be staring still after I submit this comment.

Well done to all, and a big kudos especially to Nikita and the guys behind this ACAC. I am heartened to see more taking up this art..

    Happy ambigramming, all!

    salam,
    nagfa

  32. @ Sharath Kumar:

I believe Sisters Forever is another example of a(nother) ‘asymmetrical ambigram’ in this challenge.
Notice too that the Uppercased S and F turned to Lowercased ones in their rotated versions.

  33. @Nagfa: Yeah, in fact I have seen one or two letters being asymmetrical in an ambigram. But I haven’t seen the whole word in the ambigram being asymmetrical and unless there is a genuine need to asymmetry, the idea of ‘asymmetrical ambigram’ doesn’t sound great. ‘Sisters forever’ has the designs around it which makes irregularity genuine and in heart, it takes the shape of the heart thus making it genuine. :)

It is great to see you again interacting in ambigram.com and it sounds a bit funny to read “Hi all, I’m new here..” from you. You are the one who started the idea of having a challenges and thus creating a platform for ambigrammists like us.
    Thank you for that.

  34. @Sharath! that would be great! I keep most of my ambigrams on my facebook :)

I looked up Sharath Kumar, and there isnt exactly one of you :P

I’m Deren Ozturk, studying at york uk, and my picture is 3 guys dressed smart standing outside infront of a mountain :)

  35. Another entry (which was missed initially) has been added at the end. It is an absolute beauty!

  36. @Nikita: No such mistakes next time please ;)
time machine is really awesome as well. To be added to my 1st list of favourites…

Looks as if all the talent in this world got accumulated in this contest :P

Thanks a lot for this challenge. I have been visiting some of the designs everyday!!!

  37. If everyone attached their images to the emails and didn’t embed them into the body of the email so that little attachment icon wouldn’t show up, I may have not missed those one or two that I did. ;)

  38. TIME MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If only I could jump in a time machine myself and re-post my comment from before. What a wonderful addition…Still adding to the ambigram goodness. Beautiful work.

    Guesses (so far):
    Papercut: Nasty Basty
    Time Machine: Johan

  39. Guess #2
    Papercut: Cleber
    Time Machine: Bjorn
    (this is too much fun)

  40. Man, I shouldn’t have put one entry on my flickr and my online handle on the other!

  41. @Clayton: I somehow feel your 1st guess is right ;)

  42. Nagfa, you are far from new! But welcome none-the-less. Goot to see you ah my friend.

  43. Nagfa, you are far from new! But welcome none-the-less. Goot to see you again my friend.

  44. @Clayton I would like to have created the Papercut, but it was not me who made this beauty. :)

  45. Wow, didn’t realize these had been posted yet. I hope results are yet to come?

Some of these entries are incredible on many levels. ALL of the entries involve talent and a vision and it’s nice to see a decent amount of people entering. I hope the ambigram community keeps growing like this.

    For me, the short list:

    1. ‘Tempt’ — This entry leaves me speechless. The medium is bar-none the most creative, and for that matter, that makes the execution the most impressive. For those who think painting is tough, try spray painting. And while these criteria (choice of medium and execution) are important when judging these pieces, they haven’t even touched on why the actual AMBIGRAM is so impressive. A few of you touched on Asymmetry earlier — and you beat me to it. For as much as we all love symmetry, what really interests me is asymmetry. And furthermore, asymmetrical legibility. This piece of art is equally legible from both directions, however it pushes the boundaries of symmetry which is refreshing. Whoever did this entry, I want to know you. Absolutely tight as hell.

    2. ‘Papercut’ — Another unbelievably creative choice when it comes to medium. Harkening back to ‘Tempt’, I’d love to see this as a stencil, spraypainted on some walls! I love that the colors and textures of the letters will always be dictated by their surroundings. Very clever way to present it, too. Overall concept and word choice is good. As for the legibility, I think it is spot on and you make it look easy. That’s pro.

    3. ‘Right / Wrong’ — The execution here is truly impeccable. This is the piece that most makes me think, “wow, was that really done entirely by hand?” And that should be the ultimate achievement in this particular competition. Amazing. I love the stone motif in the background (I actually have a similar element in mine — revealed at the bottom) but yours is really outstanding. Hat’s off to the artist. You can wield a pencil, man.

    4. ‘Sisters Forever / Forever Sisters’ — Extremely legible and jaw-droppingly gorgeous. What more can be said?

    5. ‘Never Erase’ — Sick. Looks like it’s done on a paper towel. Haven’t I seen that phrase somewhere on John Langdon’s website before?

    6. ‘Jonah’ — I love the printmaking method used here. Also, I don’t think I’ve seen many (if any) tesselations in these competitions before. The legibility suffers because of your use of one color. I think if you alternated colors every time it said “Jonah” it would help immensely. I dig the funky style though; it would make an awesome print.

    7. ‘Time Machine’ — Pretty flawless as far as execution and word choice. Nice work!

‘Sweet Home’ and ‘Ancient / Modern’ are definitely eye candy, too. Nice work everyone.

For a bit of back story on my own entry, it is #4 — ‘Steel Driving Man’

It is not called ‘A Driving Man’ (that’d be a needlessly complicated solution for an ‘A’, no?). My phrase was chosen from a story in American folklore – the Legend of John Henry — The Steel Driving Man.

As the legend has it, John Henry was a railroad worker from West Virginia; a man of immense strength, grit, and perseverance. He could drive railroad spikes faster and better than any man in the land. He did all his work with the power and strength of his two hands. One day, his boss came in to work and told him he was going to be replaced by a steam drill. A machine. A computer.

Or course, John Henry wouldn’t have it. He knew his talent and strength could beat any machine the boss brought his way. Sure enough, he put his money where his mouth was, and raced against the steam drill. As you can guess, he won, (he kicked the machine’s ass, in fact) and despite some not-so happy endings (he died shortly thereafter), his tale stands as a classic story of man beating machine.

My ambigram is written on top of a railroad spike with an extreme perspective. There are other railroad spikes that have been driven into the railroad ties that also say Steel Driving Man. Note the arm & hammer logo that turns into a pencil at the top.

In this competition, we are the Steel Driving Men (and Women). And it has been proven that we can beat the machines.

Thanks for the website for having this contest, thanks to Nikita for putting it all together, and thanks to all of you for creating this community and continually pushing the envelope.

    Colin Christie

  46. The results will be posted soon…more or less. In the meantime, if you guys thought THIS challenge was good…wait until you see the next one!!!

  47. Nikita – I think you should tell us all now how you define “soon” ;)

  48. I guess it is not too early or not too late to reveal my submissions.

    1. (home) sweet home: I love the guy who mentioned it as home sweet home. The idea of having a home picture and its reflection was to make it interpreted as home sweet home. Otherwise the background doesn’t have any real significance. The speciality in this design is, the ambigram part is only the background is colored and ambigram what you is the uncolored paper.

    2. Ancient/modern: not sure how many people would have noticed but it is an old school layered approach. Both the ambigram and background picture are 2 different papers. Background painted seperately and ambigram seperately and then placed the ambigram on the painting. Still I can keep the ambigram at any place and at any angle.

    3. Heart: have already explained the intention behind creating it.

Thanks to ambigram.com once again. It feels great to be part of an amazing challenge. I am not too eager to know the result as most of the designs were simply amazing! Even some good amibgrams may not be able to make it to the top5 this time :P

  49. @ ambigramers! this is my first post here…so hi & good wishes to all!

completely love all the submissions especially time machine, ancient modern, papercut, handmade, Amore-Roma, sisters forever…brilliant artists!

my submissions weren’t designed for this competition as i got to know pretty late & therefore submitted a few i had made a couple of years ago for other occasions-

    # 13 – ‘Vineet & Garima’ – a gift to my friends for their wedding
    # 22 – ‘Brian & Deepthy’ – aslo a gift to my friends for their wedding
    # 32 – ‘Harry Potter’ – and when flipped around reads – ‘Prema Lars’ a very good friend who is a big fan of Harry Potter & so this too was a gift for a memorable occasion!

I like the enthusiasm and energy in this group…and hope to be more active! I have made a few submissions earlier –
Music challenge – “sound of music” http://www.ambigram.com/acac-music-results
    Ambigrammy Award – #22 – http://www.ambigram.com/wp-content/uploads/22.jpg

There is so much to learn from all of you and a great power to create!
    Good luck to all!

    Cheers!
    Nanda

  50. @Nikita – You missed the entry that I had pix’d to you. If you need me to, I can email it instead.

Some of these entries are amazing, a few took me over a minute to figure out, and some I just gave up on trying to read (eg: blue painted background with orange lettering on canvas, and the one on ‘today’s lesson’ page).

  51. One more entry added at the end!

  52. Thanks for putting mine up, Nikita.

Shortly after reading about this challenge, one of the people I see during my daily work routine asked me if I could draw an ambigram of his girlfriend’s favorite phrase. She wanted to get it as a tattoo. He wrote the phrase in 3 lines:
    This
    too shall
    pass.
I looked at it as he had written it, and was first drawn toward the S in the center (no pun intended). I described to him some of the things I liked about making this set of letters “play nice” with each other, and told him I’d get back to him. The next day I stopped in with a very rough initial sketch. He liked it very much, and was certain his girlfriend would too. I told him I needed to smooth out the kinks and finalize it in the computer. So I went to work on it with pencil & graph paper. I showed him this hand-drawn design to make sure he liked it, and showed it to other people to make sure it was legible, before re-drawing it in the computer (Inkscape). On the day after I brought him the printed copy of my “computer-assisted” version, he told me that within an hour or two of him showing it to his girlfriend they were at the tattoo parlor setting up an appointment. I asked him to send me a photo of the tattoo after completion, which should be done some time in the coming week.

  53. I am worried if new entries get added after the result is announced ;)

@Nikita: It is just a light hearted comment. Nothing meant personally. I know how difficult it is to maintain so many entries and that too when the quality of entries is so high! Chill… ;)

And some update on QD as well please…

  54. I suppose I should post up the explanation of mine, #26, as it’s a little confusing if you don’t know what’s going on :) .

It starts with the phrase “To Life,” a common Jewish toast. It’s followed by the chai symbol, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chai_(symbol)), the Hebrew symbol for Life. And finally, it includes the word “L’Chaim,” which is the Hebrew translation of the toast “To Life.”

  55. @Jennifer: This is crazy. Without the explanation it is impossible to read even if it was written properly in English “ToLife(a symbol)L’Chaim”. See how complex it is even when written in normal English script!!!
Great effort to make it an ambigram but totally out of context and so difficult to read unless mentioned. (very easy to read once mentioned). Appreciate the effort behind it.

@Vasileios: Your design also somewhat looked out of context to me. It is highly readable and the picture when rotated looks perfectly like a kid. I loved the letter style. Only thing I couldn’t see is the parrot in the picture. May be I am not creative enough to visualize the parrot ;)

  56. Great challange! It’s amazing and amazing is the number of submissions!
Papercut is, for me, the best work!
A special thank to ACAC for the opportunity given to artists’ ambigrams!
    Diego

  57. @Colin Christie: Yes, ‘Tempt’ is another perfect example for an asymmetrical ambigram (but a mirror) and very convincing asymmetry.. :)

About your design, the background design matches so much with Clayton’s ‘right/wrong’ that I asked him if he has created both!! Nice work it is..

  58. @Colin – Thank you for the kind words regarding the Right/Wrong design. IT TOOK FOREVER. If I were to do it all over again, I would have left out the background. I’m pleased with how it turned out, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t worth my Saturdays and Sundays for a few weeks. :)

  59. @Sharath – Nice work with ‘Ancient / Modern’ and ‘Home / Sweet / Home’ – they were some of the initial designs that caught my eye. I especially like the typography in ‘Home’. ‘Heart’ is nice too and I like what you say about asymmetry. Nice work.

@Clayton – It seems it will be worth it for the time it took (hopefully:). I like the overall look of it with the background. So interesting that we have such a similar element in our designs. Mine took a while too, but I felt I needed to secure my design to the page somehow. The hands in yours are fantastic. Did you actually draw two hands? Wow.

@Nick – Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you noticed the rivets! For the piece I used colored pencil for everything except the rocks and arm & hammer / pencil logo at the top. I used ink for those elements. Nice work with Jonah, the tesselations on your website are also really sweet.

  60. I did not draw two hands. I created the symbiotogram and image, and simply posted it this way for display purposes only.

  61. I did the same for my ancient / modern symbiotogram ( created the complete symbiotogram and presented in such a way that people can see the both sides of it ). I am very sure even ‘TEMPT’ mirror ambigram presented the same way. The mirror version of it is not really created but mirrored to present it properly (as it is asymmetrical).

@Colin: Thanks for the appreciation. I was actually stunned by the detailed design in your and Clayton’s work. You both might have taken few weeks to complete the design… :)
